Further comments to CORS balloting

Here's a breakdown for you guys to understand clearer:

NUR3111 - There will be 2 ballot slots: ONE to rank lab grouping from 1 - 8; and ANOTHER to rank tutorial grouping from A - G. Lab group can be different from tutorial group.

NUR3109 - There will be 1 ballot slot: ONE to rank tutorial grouping from 1 - 8.

NUR3103 - There will be 1 ballot slot: ONE to rank grouping from A - D. This group will apply to both lab and tutorial classes. (This is the module the NUS email was referring to.)

NUR2115 - There will be 1 ballot slot: ONE to rank lab grouping from 1 -7.

That's basically it! Hope this makes my previous entry about Year 3 Balloting clearer! =]

Year 3 Semester 1 Balloting

Hey guys!

I hope at least some of you (esp. imran) checks this page!

I've PERSONALLY checked with the peeps in school and it's confirmed that for EVERY CORE MODULE assigned to us this coming semester, we will have to ballot for every tutorial and laboratory classes on 10 Aug, 9Am (please check CORS for more updates).

As for Clinical Decision Making, as per Sok Ying's email, please note that ALCNS will open only ONE BALLOT SLOT (for both tutorial and laboratory) to reduce the chances of people balloting wrongly. The group, ie. A, B, C, D, that you place in your ballot will apply to both your tutorial and laboratory classes for that module.

If you are confused, just remember this: BALLOT FOR EVERY CORE MODULE TUTORIAL & LABORATORY.

The CHIP Trial

Just helping to spread the word about an ongoing clinical trial.

The CHIP Trial - CHloroquine for Influenza Prevention trial - is investigating whether chloroquine (an antimalarial drug) can prevent flu. They are looking to enroll about 1500 volunteers between 18 to 65 to take part in this research.

The research will be conducted over 3 months, and two visits to the Clinical Trial Unit is needed - once at the start and another at the end of the trial. There will be reimbursement for time spent and transportation costs.

Not sure whether anyone replied Lai Meng from ALCNS about the opening of more SC2211 slots...but at least we now know from her reply that we are allowed to bid for our own tut/lab slots.

No more pre-allocation and sighing over unpleasant timings :)

"For NUR2112, students are allowed to ballot for their tutorial and lab classes in CORS. However, you will have to follow the lab grouping as in NUR2111 for the first week for NUR2112 as you will only do your NUR2112 tutorial/lab balloting in the first week of school re-open. I will send out email to inform all students nearer the date. "

And it looks like Hui-Chen is the module coordinator again i guess since she said in the previous mail..... "I will have to check with the module coordinator Ms Chen Hui-Chen on whether she prefer to preallocate or let you all ballot for classes."

Hey guys, my friend studying diagnostic radiology in sydney sent me this article: Radiation Overdose. Its abt a little boy who had 156 times of CT Scan which is like 8 times more than normal radiation dose a person could take over a period of 18 months.

I thought that if we were the ones holding the patient still, like this kid's dad, and didnt know that CT scan only takes a few minutes, like this kid's dad again, we could have subjected our patient to so much harm.

While ure busy dealing with Ms Renee/pharmaco or whatever other elective projects, please take some time to read this! Medicine is inviting us to have some FRIENDLY matches with them so we can all bond! :) END OCT - EARLY NOV when MOST of you should be quite free so do think about going down for some FUN! :) or to relief stress hah.

We'll be playing against different medicine levels (M1, M2, M3 etc) but we are most likely sending a combined team (from different levels) per event coz we dont have that many pple. So those interested, find your team mates (bug juniors if you need more pple!) then let me know. I'll need the sport, names (identify a captain), contact number and emails by Friday, 16 Oct 2359!

1. Basketball (Men Team, 5 pple): 24th Oct, Saturday (9am-1pm)
2. Floorball (Men Team and Women Team, 5 each): 25th Oct, Sunday (12pm-7pm)
3. Touch Rugby (Men Team & Women Team): 30th Oct, Friday (5pm-7pm)
4. Dodgeball (Mixed Team, 3 guys 3 girls): 31st Oct, Saturday (9am-1pm)
5. Frisbee (Mixed): 31st Oct, Saturday, (2pm - 5pm)

Welcome back to school! I know this is very very late, but since we’re going back to school, let’s have a back to school theme. As suggested by Faiz, let’s go back to our uniform days. And I mean JC uniform. But in order not to totally embarrass ourselves, let’s have a modified uniform day. Just wear something that represents your former school ie you can mix and match your school uniform, wear the PE tshirt, or just accessorize yourself with your school’s paraphernalia ie badges or what have you.

For our friends who were from poly, you can wear whatever you want be it your secondary school uniform or your respective poly’s tshirt and stuff.

Til then, hope you all have enjoyed your recess week and by now hopefully most of you have already started on your case studies. I, for one, have not...

Hey everybody!

On behalf of Sherly, our Nursoc president, I'd like to thank each and everyone of you for coming down for QuintFac Bash to lend your support to the event. Thanks for lending your cheers and voices to the participants and for spurring them on stage. It was without question who brought the house down with all their screaming and enthusiasm. :)

I'd also like to announce to you all that among us, in fact among all the healthcare faculties, Nursing has, officially, the most talented musician of them all and she is none other than our very own Caron Koh aka C. Koh!!! :) A huge congratulations to her for being the winner of Project Superstar after beating 6 other talented performers to claim the Agong Challenge trophy! She managed to charm and captivate the audience, as well as the judges, with her lovely voice and heartfelt lyrics of her song, one of which she penned herself. Well done Caron! :D

And not forgetting our nimble dancers, who put up a great performance for us last night. Even though we did not manage to get first place, I just want to let you all know that you have all done us proud by taking that step forward to perform in front of so many people and for putting in so much hardwork and overcoming so many obstacles just to dance on that day. I just hope that you all enjoyed yourself while on stage because we certainly enjoyed ourselves cheering you on. Good job girls. :)

In conjunction with Singapore’s participation, Singapore Tourism Board has introduced the student volunteer programme, to give students a chance to gain exposure to this international event.

1. Objectives
• To recruit student volunteers whom play a crucial role in enhancing the experience of the Singapore Pavilion.
• To allow students based in Shanghai to have a prized opportunity to be part of an international world-class event.
• To cultivate a pool of volunteers aligned to the Youth Ambassador Programme, where they can be exposed to other events beyond World Expo.
• To nurture students’ interest and passion in Singapore Tourism, and enable them to be economically active members the tourism industry

2. Opportunities available
Student volunteers will be given the chance to be part of various services including:
• Events - Events Facilitating, Events Planning, Performers management, Ushering, Crowd Control
• Hospitality - Reception, Customer Service & Guiding; Relaying the pavilion experience by engaging the visitors.
• Liaison & media - Administrative and co-ordination support to VIP delegates; Create content for print and electronic publications.
• Spearhead publicity and marketing events to create awareness of Singapore Pavilion, Promoting Singapore’s Tourism products

3. Recognition and rewards
• Letter of recognition - signed off by Chief Executive or Ambassador for fulfillment of minimum requirements and also a separate certificate for outstanding performers

4. Selection criteria and training schedule
The criteria for selection of volunteers are:
• Must be based in Shanghai from May – Oct 2010
• Must be able to commit to at least 1 month of the 6 months volunteer programme & prior training arrangements (not necessary on a daily basis)
• Must be comfortable in both English and Chinese
• Good team player
• Should have a pleasant disposition
• Should possess effective communication skills

Should be service-driven and highly adaptable in a dynamic environment
Selected student volunteers are required to attend a pre-departure briefing (tentatively scheduled in November) and a 6-day training program when they arrive in Shanghai (not necessary on a daily basis).

Theoretically speaking, we do have 1 month of holidays after clinicals, this is a rare opportunity for us to take part in Expo, a lovely educational experience for those who have visited previous events.

I understand that cost will be an issue as we'll have to fork our own airfare and lodging costs. There is a briefing session on 01 Oct 09 as listed in the weblink above, i believe they will clarify more details there (if you have any)

QuintFac Bash

Hey everybody.

The Bash comm. Is appealing for 3 more volunteers to help out during the Bash this coming Friday. Volunteers will be required to help out in the packing of the goodie bags, help out with pushing the play button during the events, and to ensure that the contestants get on stage on time.

However, the volunteers should not worry about being stuck backstage throughout the entire show because we’ll be working on a rotational basis.

Volunteers will need to report at Zouk earlier at 4.30pm. Your tickets will be paid for ie it’s going to be free-of-charge.
Interested parties please let me know.

Oh and those who want to buy the tickets from me, this Monday is the last day of sales otherwise, you can still buy them at the door on the day itself.

Date: 22 Sept 2009, Tuesday of RECESS (Read: Not READING, so chill a bit) Week
Time: 1800hrs till Late
Venue: Prince George's Park Residences Barbecue Pit No. 3 (only cos it's free to book there)
Price: Approximately $5-$10 (sorry SAF cannot sponsor lol)

There will be a tantalising array of local barbecue fare, together with sides which the Health Promotion Board will agree with (based on the Food Guide Pyramid). There will be halal food, no beef, and definitely pasta salads and roasted tubers for the vegetarians! So grab your fellow Nursing friends and do come down for an evening of innocent fun, gastronomical and carcinogenic delights, and most definitely, great company!

Let's Take A Walk

A last call for people! I've previously emailed you all about this event...

Let's Take A Walk, a walking event by Raleigh Society, is an overnight round-island group walking event organised by Raleigh Society as a fund raising event for selected beneficiaries. This year it will be held on 19-20 December (Sat to Sun).

There are 3 categories, namely 10km JalanWalk, 50km PowerWalk, and 100km ExtremeWalk. Due the dates being at the tailend of our next clinicals, I am suggesting doing the 50km PowerWalk. The category is scheduled to start from 19 Dec at 0800 hr (registration at 0730 hr), and cutoff timing is 15 hours after start, so we'll be finishing latest at 2300 hr on the same day. If we have to work 6 days/week for clinicals, can request for off on Saturday and afternoon shift on Sunday.

This event is non-competitive, so don't have to walk like the Gurkas (you'll understand if you ever join The New Paper Big Walk...). We can schedule our own rest breaks and meal breaks.

Entry fees are $50 per person for registration before 1 October; fees are largely going to charity. I understand the cost might be considered steep. Look at it as donating to charity and getting a unique workout. :)

For 50km PowerWalk category, a team of minimum 3 and maximum 6 people is required for registration. So far myself, Betsy and Faiz are interested in doing, but hopefully we can have more people joining and turn it into a mini outing of sorts. We can form more than 1 team.

Hey everyone! I just got back from watching the Combined Martial Art Display (CMAD). It was an interesting performance. Entertaining. Never saw anything like it before. Was great because we got to see many different kinds of martial arts and most of all, we saw Chi Ling, Connie, Juanna and Shufen's hardwork. To the 4 girls, good job! great show! (:

Issues of Immunology

Apparently our immunology lecturer was quite bored during the 15min break and he spoke to a few of us at the back which I'd like to share with the rest.

He enquired about a couple of issues such as:
- Is he speaking too fast? (Yes, the back-row thinks so)
- Does he need to repeat his points? (Yes, i feedback to him to repeat if we show him a puzzled face)

Then he mentioned about the need of a balance between repeating his points and rant on till 5pm or going thru fast & end early... which is a good thing coz everyone will understand better; but it will be a nerve-wrecking session if one would like to catch a show at 5pm (yeah, he specifically said that, lol).

Someone also did brought up to him to change the format of the lect notes so that it wont be that fixed 4-slides-a-page-portrait format.

That poor lad seemed to have a worried face, so if you have any questions or want him to change his teaching methods, pls do feedback to him, i'm sure he'll appreciate it! and do feel free to raise up your hands if you dun understand the jargon he's rattling, im sure the cohort wont mind.

He came up to me for the first time even though we've crossed paths many times without acknowledging each other's presence to ask me to encourage you guys/girls to come.

It's really fun, and there's the girls team to play with for the girls. The people there are not so pro, amateur to intermediate level so it will really be quite fun as the game slows down a lot from a professional game haha.

Tertiary Ezlink Card Replacement

According to the timeslot given by OSA (Office of Student Affairs), we can start exchanging our new CEPAS ezlink card on 18 Aug 2009 9am-5pm.

However, if you are dying to get the new card or you would like to give those staff some business to do, you can drop by any day since Sem II, Day 1. Apparently, i heard they are very free and any student from any faculty can do the card exchange since then.

The timeslot was just to maintain crowd control which doesnt exist in the 1st place. :p

Well, I was just bumming around in front of my laptop printing my notes checking my nusmail when I suddenly thought, why not we have a class blog so that Imran and Marcus, and of course us, will have an easier time disseminating information?

Thus instead of bumming around further and, God forbid, start reading my notes(I know some of you will roll your eyes and sigh, "Haiz, slacker." HAHA :P)I decided to click my mouse and type a bit more and thus we have this blog now.

The responsibility of this blog rests on our shoulders, and its success or failure is entirely dependent on us. I hope that all can utilise this place for anything and everything that you want to disseminate to all, be it academic announcements like change of lecture venues or that you just got into Dean's List, activity announcements for class outings(we've never successfully done one with at least 50% attendance) or a movie screening that you'd like to watch with anyone who's interested, or simply just random grumblings about our school life like maybe how the new immunology chairs actually suck(not my personal reflection!).

Just stop short of selling insurance or lifestyle products here yeah!

So feel free to make it OUR own space, change the layout, change the address above(cos we have 80 potential nurses in our batch lol), comment, critique, express etc. etc..
